Winter is a magical season –  a time when nature slows down, inviting us to rest and rejuvenate. It’s also a season that challenges our body, especially our skin and digestion, due to the cold and dry weather.  Ayurveda offers a treasure trove of remedies and practices to help us stay healthy, balanced and radiant during the colder months. In this blog, we’ll explore practical Ayurvedic tips for winter wellness.     Ayurvedic Approach to Skin Health in Winter     During winter, Vata and Kapha are aggravated and cause dry skin. According to Ayurveda, all chronic dryness-related issues fall under Kushta (skin disorders). Vata imbalance: Causes dryness. Kapha imbalance: Leads to itching. Rakta (blood) imbalance: Causes redness and irritation. However, the primary imbalance is always Vata in all kinds of dryness issues and the only treatment for this is nourishment both from inside and outside.   Dry Skin vs Gut Health: The Connection   Dry skin isn’t just about harsh weather but also an internal imbalance. According to Ayurveda, poor gut health is a major culprit for dry skin. Here are some solutions: Keep your bowels regular: Vata resides in the large intestine. Irregular bowel movements can worsen Vata imbalance, leading to dryness. Constipation, often triggered by overthinking and stress, is a common culprit. Calm your mind: Since the gut and brain are closely linked, grounding practices like yoga and mindfulness can help. Timing for fruits: Eat fruits during the warmer hours of the day (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to aid digestion. Good fats and spices:                                                                                                          Incorporate good fats into your diet, like ghee, nuts, and seeds, to keep your skin and body lubricated. Also add warming spices like ginger and cinnamon to boost your digestive fire.   Are Hydrating Creams Helpful?   Do the so-called hydrating creams with hyaluronic acid and many other fancy ingredients that burn a hole in your pocket really hydrate? The answer is a big no! Think about how your skin feels after swimming or showering – it’s often drier than before. Why? Because water is drying.  Water doesn’t moisturize; rather, it depletes natural oils from your skin. Water-based products, though marketed as hydrating, can actually dry your skin. The opposite of dryness is oiliness, not wetness. So, the best way to keep your skin hydrated is by applying oil.  The best oil for combating dryness is organic black sesame oil. Now you might be arguing – Why not coconut oil? Many modern doctors advise using coconut oil on the body but trust me it will dry you out further.  Unlike coconut oil, which is naturally drying, black sesame oil deeply nourishes and balances Vata Dosha – the primary culprit for dryness. But external oiling is just one part of the equation. Internal hydration is even more critical. While topical treatments might provide temporary relief, true hydration begins from within.    The Magic of Shat Dhaut Ghrita (SDG)   Shat Dhaut Ghrita means “100 times washed ghee.” This Ayurvedic remedy transforms ghee into a silky, neutral-pH cream that penetrates deeply into the skin. You may be wondering why I recommend using a hundred times washed ghee for skin conditions. Why not use plain cow ghee?  To understand this, first, let me explain the process of Samskara to you. So, when you convert one substance into another, it is called Samskara in Ayurveda.  When we do Samskara of ghee by washing it 100 times, the particle size of ghee is also reduced. Hence, something that was granular, thick and heavy is now changed to smooth, silky and easily penetrable into the skin. Now your skin is able to absorb this ghee much more easily and quickly.  SDG makes your skin properly nourished because of the active particles going deeper into the skin.  SDG is the ultimate moisturizer for winter skin care. It is great for chapped lips, cracked feet, sunburn and household burns.  The best part is you can easily make SDG at home.    Use SDG after showering for the ultimate winter skincare experience.   Don’t Diet in Winter!   As soon as holidays get over and the new year begins, everyone makes resolutions to lose weight. However, Ayurveda says that winter isn’t the time for restrictive dieting.    Your digestive fire is strongest in winter During winter, the outside environment is cold. So your body produces more heat to keep it warm internally. This process is similar to homeostasis which ignites your Agni (digestive fire), allowing you to digest heavier foods.  During winters, you automatically feel a craving for rich, creamy and spicy food. This is your body’s internal mechanism or intelligence telling you to eat all these because the body is craving for it.  There is no harm in eating the heavy stuff made with Urad dal and wheat during this time which are contraindicated during the other seasons.  However, portion control is key – always leave some room in your stomach to avoid overwhelming your digestion. Build immunity and strength Winter is ideal for physical activity, strength training and sex. This is also the best time to enhance stamina and immunity for the year ahead.  In summer, the heat weakens Agni and reduces the body’s strength. Premature Ejaculation: An Ayurvedic Perspective

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common male problem that can lead to frustration, shattered relationships and low self-esteem. It is the situation when ejaculation occurs sooner than desired during intercourse. This affects one in three men at some stage of life. It may seem like an awkward topic and not many like to talk about it, but this is part of men’s health and should be addressed. Every health disorder, whether physical or mental, needs proper attention and treatment.    Cause of Premature Ejaculation   In Ayurveda, the corresponding term for this problem is Sukragatavata. As the name suggests, it is primarily caused by an imbalance in Vata Dosha.  Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, offers a holistic approach to managing this condition by addressing the root cause—Vata Dosha imbalance—and nourishing the reproductive system (Shukra Dhatu). In the Sushruta Samhita, it is explained that premature ejaculation occurs when Vata Dosha becomes imbalanced. This leads to rapid ejaculation and weakening of Shukra Dhatu – the vital tissue responsible for reproductive health: शुक्रक्षयः शोषणं च वातः शीघ्रगमनं च ततः। वातदोषेण जनितं वातनाशं च योजयेत्।। (Sushruta Samhita, Chikitsasthana, Chapter 26) Translation: “Premature ejaculation is caused by Vata aggravation, leading to rapid ejaculation and depletion of reproductive strength. Treatments that pacify Vata are recommended for healing.” Apana, on the other hand, is a subtype of Vata energy, specifically governing the lower abdomen and reproductive organs.  An imbalance in Apana Vata causes premature ejaculation.   Other Causes of Premature Ejaculation   Premature ejaculation can happen at any age. Apart from ageing and Vata imbalance, there are, in addition, many other reasons for the condition.: Emotional factors like stress, anxiety and depression  Erectile dysfunction Hormonal imbalances Oversensitivity in sex organs   Ayurvedic Management of Premature Ejaculation   Here’s a guide to Ayurvedic practices for managing PE:   Herbal support In Ayurveda, there are some amazing herbs, such as Brahmi, Mandukaparni, Kapikachu, and Eranda, among others.  Having them in certain combinations along with diet correction, have shown tremendous positive results in the treatment of premature ejaculation.  But take them strictly under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor to avoid adverse reactions. Amla powder Have  2 teaspoons of Amla powder mixed with ghee during lunch daily. Nutmeg milk Crush the sun-dried rind of nutmeg into a fine powder. Then, add 5g of the powder to hot milk, and subsequently, boil it. Have this drink before you go to bed. Abhyanga (oil massage) Do regular massages around the abdomen from your naval downward using a mix of cinnamon oil and organic black sesame oil. Black sesame oil is highly revered in Ayurveda, whereas cinnamon is a healing herb. Yoga Yoga, on the one hand, can be a supportive practice that, in addition, increases body awareness and control. Yoga poses like Pavanamuktasana, Halasana, Sarvangasan, Kakasana, Kati-chakrasana and backward bending poses are extremely beneficial for strengthening the reproductive organs.  Mental well-being Needless to say, a partner’s assurance and comfort, psychological counselling/therapy, meditation, breathing exercises, and meditation help anyone overcome this problem and enhance results. Kapha Time is Here! Ayurveda’s Secrets for Staying Balanced

Changing seasons can have an effect on your Doshas. That’s why it is important to understand your Dosha imbalances with each season and find the best practices that would help you to adapt and be in good health despite the changes. Kapha season usually refers to late winter and spring.   The season is typically cold, damp and stagnant. Known as Shishira Ritu in Ayurveda, this is the season where Kapha Dosha gains dominance and your Agni (digestive fire) is at its peak.    Identifying Kapha   Kapha people are most likely to have a compact big-boned structure. They have deep-set eyes and strong hair, and tend to gain weight.    Excessive Dosha can manifest as chest and lung or nasal congestions. It can also cause digestive problems due to a sluggish gut. Emotional factors might create overeating & end up in gaining weight.  Kapha’s imbalance is also associated with sadness and emotional turbulence.    It tends to favour a lethargic sedentary lifestyle. Individuals who have heightened the Dosha are likely to suffer from diabetes, gallstones, hypertension, varicose veins and oedema.    Symptoms of Kapha imbalance   A Kapha imbalance is usually marked by the following symptoms: Lethargy Excessive sleepiness Nausea Constipation Indigestion   Ayurvedic tips to balance kapha   Ayurveda works on the principles of Doshas – Vata, Kapha and Pitta. While each of us has a unique proportion of each of the Doshas, a predominant Dosha tends to increase more quickly than the others.    Kapha season tends to bring on the qualities and symptoms of excess stagnation. Its dominance  is represented as a heavy sluggish tendency, it is characterized by heaviness and slow gait. An imbalance in this can lead to stubbornness. Trying out new routines or interests can stimulate a lethargic mind.   As per Ayurveda, a healthy balance can be restored by following a lifestyle, food regimen, and exercise pattern. A vigorous self-massage with warm organic sesame oil is prescribed to invigorate the stagnant Kapha. Sesame oil abhyanga aids in balancing Kapha Dosha.    Kapha season is when the dosha is dominant. It is characterized by slow movements and grounding qualities. Those people who are prone to it must keep their feet warm and protect their chests from cold breezes.   Opt for warm food and steer clear of raw food as well as frozen foods and beverages. The consumption of bitter and astringent tastes has lowering effects on it.    Waking up before sunrise can also  be very beneficial to a Kapha personality. Do not sleep late into the day. An early start can help balance this dosha .   A glass of warm water can help activate your bowels and cleanse your body as a persons tend to suffer from constipation. Clearing of the nasal passage will provide relief from the symptoms.    Ayurvedic tips to welcome the Kapha season   Keeping warm is intrinsic to handling the Kapha season. Avoid cold and damp places. Consume warm meals, warm teas, warm water and nuts. Add Tulsi or mint leaves to your tea to stimulate the digestive system. Consumption of warm beverages and sipping hot water throughout the day help in heating and detoxifying.   Stay warm. Move out of cold damp spaces and choose warm dry places.    Kapha season tends to bring lethargy. It might herald the onslaught of depressive and stagnant thoughts and feelings. Ensure that you engage and rev up your psychological well-being.   Another often-noticed fallout of the Kapha season is the lack of energy. It can get exacerbated due to stress and inadequate sleep.  Its combat imbalance, therefore, with good sleep hygiene, can significantly improve energy levels   Activity is crucial for balancing the dosha. Yoga can help significantly during the Kapha season. You can balance Kapha by combining pranayama with yoga to ensure sufficient circulation and strengthen the respiratory system.    Alternate nose breathing works wonders for its imbalance.  You can also incorporate Surya Namaskar into your yoga routine. Activate your body during the mornings and evenings with yoga and daily walks.   Consume seasonal fruits like oranges, pears and apples. However, avoid very sour fruits. Also, do not consume heavy fruits like coconut, bananas, and dates.    Incorporate turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, fennel, and nutmeg as they can help generate heat. These spices will pacify and stimulate the digestive system.     Correcting Kapha imbalance   Ayurveda can help you manage Kapha imbalance with lifestyle modifications and the right diet. Your diet must neutralize its properties. Since it is light and cool, warm and dry foods can help restore the balance.    Foods that are light and spiced can help curtail the tendency to overeat. Heavy foods, on the other hand, tend to burden the system and, consequently, worsen Kapha symptoms. Oily and pungent foods aggravate Kapha.    Kapha tends to produce plenty of moist mucus and it is therefore recommended to eat dry foods with minimal ghee or oil. You can include grains, beans and seeds. Ayurveda does not recommend consuming buttermilk and milk products during its season.   Kapha is often aggravated by milk products. However, you can consider adding yoghurt or ghee to your diet. The consumption of wheat must be reduced too. Avoid processed foods and refined sugar. Sweets might increase the lethargic feeling. Refined foods have hardly any fibre; therefore, they can aggravate it   Ayurvedic Herbs to Combat Kapha Dosha   Ayurvedic herbs that can support Kapha include Trikatu, Bibhitaki,  and Arjuna.   People use bibhitaki, a traditional herb, to treat throat infections and other ailments related to its imbalance. Its anti-oxidant properties relieve stress and improve gastrointestinal functioning.   Turmeric has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It works, therefore, as a soothing agent on the digestive system and, in addition, prevents the growth of yeast and bacteria.   Ginger provides relief from digestive issues and nausea.
