‌ Ever heard of podikizhi – the little pouch of healing in Ayurveda? Let’s talk about it!   Have you ever felt muscle pain after a long day? Or maybe those pesky leg cramps just won’t let you relax? If so, you’re not alone! Most people experience pain due to muscular discomfort. While there are several solutions out in the market, Ayurveda has something unique known as ‘podikizhi’.   Podikizhi, also known as Churna Pinda Sweda is a part of Swedana or sudation therapy in Ayurveda that is commonly used for pain relief and improving circulation.    Ancient Ayurvedic texts mention the therapy as follows:   स्वेदनं नाम संतापः स्तम्भगौरवशूलनुत्।।   Charak Samhita, sutrasthanam 14/59   Translation: Swedana (sudation therapy) is the process of generating heat in the body, which helps in relieving stiffness, heaviness, and pain.   संसृष्टं तण्डुलैः पुष्पैर्गोधूमैश्च सुशोधितैः। पीडितं स्विन्नदेहस्य पिण्डस्वेदनमुच्यते।।   Sushruta Samhita, sutrasthanam 35/27   Translation: Pinda Sweda is a therapy in which a bolus (pouch) filled with various medicinal substances like grains, flowers, and purified herbs is applied to the body after heating.   What is Podikizhi?   Podikzhi (herbal powder poultice) is an Ayurvedic body treatment that helps reduce pain and inflammation. The name “podikizhi” comes from two words: “Podi,” meaning “powder,” and “Kizhi,” meaning “bag” or “pouch.” So, podikizhi essentially refers to a “pouch of herbal powder.”     This therapy involves using a cloth tied into a bolus filled with herbal powders, which is then heated and applied to the body for therapeutic benefits. It’s a traditional Ayurvedic practice aimed at detoxification, pain relief and rejuvenation.   At our hospital, podikizhi massage is done after an Abhyanga or oil massage with our Pain Oil. After Abhyanga, podikizhi is massaged over the body, typically in regions of pain and stiffness. The heat produced by the herbal powder opens up the skin pores and enables the herbs to reach into muscles and tissues where it expedites healing.   Since podikizhi is mainly aimed at fixing Vata-related issues, it is highly effective in treating muscle stiffness, joint pain and inflammation. Different types of Pichu can be used for various conditions, each offering unique benefits.     Yoni Pichu     ‘Yoni’ means ‘vagina’ and ‘Pichu’ means ‘cotton swab.’   One of the most remarkable uses of Pichu therapy is Yoni Pichu, a specialized treatment for women’s intimate health.   Many women suffer from vaginal dryness, burning sensation, itching, or discomfort, especially after menopause, childbirth, or due to hormonal imbalances. For a burning sensation, use Shat Dhaut Ghrita (SDG cream). For vaginal itching, you can use Triphala Ghrita as well.   If vaginal dryness is due to menopause, using a combination of sesame oil and Triphala Ghrita can be very effective. The sesame oil provides deep hydration, while Triphala Ghrita balances vaginal pH and reduces inflammation.     Who should avoid Yoni Pichu?   If you are below 13 years old If you haven’t got your first period yet If you have never had sex During menstruation   This treatment is a natural alternative to chemical-based vaginal lubricants and can help women regain comfort and confidence in their intimate health.   Shiro Pichu   If you suffer from migraines, tension headaches, stress or insomnia, Shiro Pichu can be a powerful therapy. Licorice – My Favourite Ayurvedic Herb

Licorice or Mulethi is one of my favorite Ayurvedic herbs. It’s versatile, and beneficial, and can be termed a ‘star herb’ for its remarkable impact on health, skin and hair.    Ayurvedic Significance of Licorice   Licorice is called ‘Mulkethi’ or ‘Yashtimadhu’ in Ayurveda.   This herb is mentioned the most number of times throughout the 8 books Acharya Charaka – the father of Ayurvedic medicine, has written. It is, in fact, used as an ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines for different health issues; specifically, it addresses issues ranging from skin diseases to diabetes!     Why I Love Licorice Tea     Licorice tea has been my go-to drink for years. I’ve swapped my morning coffee for this soothing herbal tea; consequently, it’s been a game-changer for my health.   Here’s why: Improves digestion: Licorice strengthens the digestive fire (Agni) and  gives a great digestive boost if consumed as a morning tea. Hence, it is considered perfect for starting the day with a healthy gut.   Balances Dosha: Licorice (Yashtimadhu) is categorised under sweet-tasting herbs. It helps reduce Kapha and Pitta disorders, also, it reduces fever and, in addition, is nourishing and rejuvenating.   Boosts vitality: As the main ingredient of my Ojas tea, it keeps me energized throughout the day.   Slows aging: Its antioxidant properties help in slowing down the aging process. It accelerates the cell renewal process and also, results in a youthful glow on the skin.   Improves complexion: Mulethi brightens the skin and reduces blemishes. Its oral intake, consequently, purifies the blood and, in addition, expels the toxins from the body.  Additionally, it can be used in topical face packs (in a small amount) to add instant glow to your skin.     How to Make Licorice Tea     So, now you know that it is a wonder herb for balancing health as mentioned in our ancient texts. Let’s make a great cup of licorice tea: Take a 1-inch piece of licorice root (not powder). Add it to 2 glasses of water. Boil and reduce it to 1 glass. Sip this warm tea every morning. You can add ½ inch of cinnamon stick and dry ginger to this tea for added benefits. This simple morning tea has improved my digestion, skin health and overall wellness.      Licorice: A Word of Caution!     However, it isn’t for everyone: High B.P.: Avoid if you suffer from hypertension or have a family history of high B.P.   Take breaks: It’s also important to take breaks with these herbs. Consume licorice for a maximum of 3 months, pause for a while and resume.    Use the root: Choose licorice root over powder for the purest form.   Licorice for Hair Care     Healthy, shiny hair is something we all desire, and it plays a vital role in my haircare routine. Here’s my secret hair mask recipe that works wonders: Ingredients: 3 tablespoons fenugreek seeds (soaked overnight) 1 whole egg (or flaxseeds as a substitute) 1 tablespoon yogurt ½ tablespoon hair oil (optional, for dry hair) 10g licorice powder How to Use: Blend the fenugreek seeds into a paste. Mix in the egg, yogurt, and licorice powder. Apply to your scalp and hair, section by section. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. It acts as the secret ingredient in this mask; consequently, it promotes hair growth, adds shine, and cleanses the scalp. Premature Ejaculation: An Ayurvedic Perspective

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common male problem that can lead to frustration, shattered relationships and low self-esteem. It is the situation when ejaculation occurs sooner than desired during intercourse. This affects one in three men at some stage of life. It may seem like an awkward topic and not many like to talk about it, but this is part of men’s health and should be addressed. Every health disorder, whether physical or mental, needs proper attention and treatment.    Cause of Premature Ejaculation   In Ayurveda, the corresponding term for this problem is Sukragatavata. As the name suggests, it is primarily caused by an imbalance in Vata Dosha.  Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, offers a holistic approach to managing this condition by addressing the root cause—Vata Dosha imbalance—and nourishing the reproductive system (Shukra Dhatu). In the Sushruta Samhita, it is explained that premature ejaculation occurs when Vata Dosha becomes imbalanced. This leads to rapid ejaculation and weakening of Shukra Dhatu – the vital tissue responsible for reproductive health: शुक्रक्षयः शोषणं च वातः शीघ्रगमनं च ततः। वातदोषेण जनितं वातनाशं च योजयेत्।। (Sushruta Samhita, Chikitsasthana, Chapter 26) Translation: “Premature ejaculation is caused by Vata aggravation, leading to rapid ejaculation and depletion of reproductive strength. Treatments that pacify Vata are recommended for healing.” Apana, on the other hand, is a subtype of Vata energy, specifically governing the lower abdomen and reproductive organs.  An imbalance in Apana Vata causes premature ejaculation.   Other Causes of Premature Ejaculation   Premature ejaculation can happen at any age. Apart from ageing and Vata imbalance, there are, in addition, many other reasons for the condition.: Emotional factors like stress, anxiety and depression  Erectile dysfunction Hormonal imbalances Oversensitivity in sex organs   Ayurvedic Management of Premature Ejaculation   Here’s a guide to Ayurvedic practices for managing PE:   Herbal support In Ayurveda, there are some amazing herbs, such as Brahmi, Mandukaparni, Kapikachu, and Eranda, among others.  Having them in certain combinations along with diet correction, have shown tremendous positive results in the treatment of premature ejaculation.  But take them strictly under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor to avoid adverse reactions. Amla powder Have  2 teaspoons of Amla powder mixed with ghee during lunch daily. Amla, also known as ‘Amritphal’ (the nectar fruit) in Ayurveda, is a highly potent fruit.  It replenishes the nutrients in the body and restores vitality. Nutmeg milk Crush the sun-dried rind of nutmeg into a fine powder. Then, add 5g of the powder to hot milk, and subsequently, boil it. Have this drink before you go to bed. Abhyanga (oil massage) Do regular massages around the abdomen from your naval downward using a mix of cinnamon oil and organic black sesame oil. Black sesame oil is highly revered in Ayurveda, whereas cinnamon is a healing herb. Yoga Yoga, on the one hand, can be a supportive practice that, in addition, increases body awareness and control. Yoga poses like Pavanamuktasana, Halasana, Sarvangasan, Kakasana, Kati-chakrasana and backward bending poses are extremely beneficial for strengthening the reproductive organs.  Mental well-being Needless to say, a partner’s assurance and comfort, psychological counselling/therapy, meditation, breathing exercises, and meditation help anyone overcome this problem and enhance results. Relax and rest Overexertion and lack of sleep can aggravate Vata and weaken your system. Ensure a proper sleep routine; consequently, this will help the body heal.   Lifestyle habits play a huge role in managing premature ejaculation. Incorporating regular exercise, as well as balanced meals and quality sleep, can significantly improve energy levels and, consequently, reduce stress. Alopecia Areata is a condition where hair falls out in small patches, leaving bald spots on the scalp.  In Ayurveda, this condition is called ‘Indralupta’ and is said to result from the imbalance in our Doshas. Ayurveda approaches this by addressing the root causes rather than just symptoms, aiming for lasting results.   What is Alopecia Areata?     Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss on the scalp and, in some cases, other areas of the body. This is different from regular hair fall as you lose your hair in patches.    The Causes   According to Ayurveda, diseases are usually the result of an imbalance in Doshas. Insomnia – Cure it Naturally with Ayurveda

In my career, I have come across many patients who have been battling diabetes for years. During my consultations with them, I often notice that they share something in common – months and years of improper sleep or, to be more precise, insomnia. But they are not the only ones.      In today’s world, insomnia is indeed a serious health issue faced by many. As per reports, at least 38% of adults around the world are deprived of sleep.     Stress, bad eating habits and other factors can all contribute to the condition.    Lack of sleep not only makes you feel tired for the whole day. It also has an adverse effect on your physical and mental health, increasing the chances of having diseases.     Ayurvedic treatment for insomnia includes dietary corrections, herbal medicines (if needed), and Ayurvedic therapy that promotes better sleep.    Let’s learn more about insomnia, therefore, from the Ayurvedic perspective in this blog.      What is Insomnia ?     Insomnia is a sleeping disorder, marked by trouble falling asleep, not being able to stay asleep, or not having good quality sleep.  It can have a negative impact on your overall well-being and functioning.     Insomnia can be acute, where it lasts for a few days or weeks, and chronic, where it lasts for months or years.  Even if you are doing everything right, you are putting your long-term health at risk if your sleep is not on point.    Taking care of your sleep is extremely important for preventing many diseases, like diabetes, PCOS, and cancer.  Even a partial or full night of sleep deprivation, consequently, can increase your insulin resistance and your sugar levels.    Lack of sleep also causes a reduction in immunity, reduced strength of the body and the mind, weakness, debility, and reduced fertility and longevity.     Insomnia as per Ayurveda     Ayurveda calls insomnia “Anidra” or “Nidranasha.”    Although it seems to be a modern-day problem, Ayurveda has always emphasized the importance of sleep for health and longevity in ancient texts.     “Nidra samyak prakrutisthaa sukham dukham pushtikarshyam |   Balaabalam vrushata klibata jnaanajnaane cha karanam ||”    Charaka Samhita (Sutra Sthana 21:35)    Translation: Sleep, when balanced, leads to happiness, nourishment, strength, and wisdom. However, improper sleep results in suffering, weakness, and ignorance.     In Ayurvedic terms, Nidra (sleep) is one of the three pillars of health (Traya Upasthambha), along with Aahara (food) and Brahmacharya (regulated lifestyle).     Acharya Sushruta has stated that inadequate sleep can lead to Prameha (diabetes), Hridroga (heart disease) and even premature aging.      Ayurvedic Approach to Insomnia      According to Ayurveda, a low Kapha Dosha and an aggravated Vata Dosha could be the reasons for insomnia.     Vata Dosha controls movement and activity, while Kapha Dosha takes care of lubrication of joints, nourishment, growth, etc.     Imbalances in these Doshas, consequently, can affect your ability to sleep well.  Insomnia can be cured Ayurvedically through lifestyle and dietary changes, medicines (if required), and therapies.      Ayurvedic Lifestyle Tips for Better Sleep      Ayurveda promotes a set of lifestyle changes that can help you sleep better.      Fix your sleep schedule    Set a specific sleeping and wake-up time for every day; in addition, this should include weekends. This, consequently, helps you establish good sleep quality and set the body’s internal sleep clock.    Avoid distractions     Remove any gadgets from your bedroom that can distract you from sleeping. For instance, leave your mobile phones in the living room (this is something I follow).    Create a relaxing sleep environment     The ideal environment for sleep, therefore, would be a dark, quiet, and cool bedroom.  Avoid using bright lights in the bedroom. Also, make sure that the temperature in the room is cool and comfortable.    Engage in some mindfulness and meditation     Practice meditation and mindfulness to calm your mind and, as a result, to have proper sleep.  Take a few minutes each night, for instance, to practice deep breathing or, alternatively, to do some guided meditation.    Also, practising yoga poses like Shavasana (Corpse Pose) and Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose) before bed can relax your nervous system and improve sleep quality.      Ayurvedic Dietary Tips for Better Sleep     Your diet also has a role to play in your sleeping pattern.    Eat a light dinner    Moreover, have warm, freshly cooked, and easily digestible foods for dinner. Therefore, avoid heavy, spicy, or raw foods, as they can indeed aggravate your Vata Dosha.    Drinking warm milk infused with a pinch of nutmeg before bed is an excellent Ayurvedic remedy for insomnia.    Avoid stimulants     Try to avoid coffee, alcohol, and other stimulating drinks that contain sugar at night.     These drinks make it difficult for you to go to sleep, thus affecting your sleep timings. Instead, consider opting for herbal tea or water.    Stay hydrated    Drink plenty of water during the day. But they could also be a result of any underlying health condition.    Ayurveda offers many tried-and-true methods for improving focus and mental clarity. These techniques help enhance general well-being and cognitive performance.    You can enhance your general well-being and cognitive performance by implementing Ayurvedic mental clearing activities into your everyday routine.      The Ayurvedic Perspective     According to Ayurveda, lack of mental clarity and focus is a condition that involves your mind or Manas and channels associated with the mind (Manovaha Srotas). It could also be a result of Dosha imbalances.    In Ayurveda, mental clarity is closely linked to one of the three Gunas or qualities – Sattva (purity and balance), while brain fog is associated with excess of the other two Gunas – Tamas and Rajas.   A person with high Sattva has a calm, clear, and sharp mind. Excess Tamas results in sluggishness, forgetfulness, and confusion. Similarly, Rajas creates restlessness, overthinking, and stress.   Balancing these qualities through food, lifestyle, and mindful practices is the key to mental clarity.      Another reason for the condition could be excess consumption of Viruddha Ahara or incompatible foods. Such foods contribute to Ama (toxin buildup) in the body that affects your digestive health and energy levels. Since the mind and body are connected, poor digestion can indirectly contribute to sluggishness and brain fog.      Ayurvedic Practices for Mental Clarity and Focus     These Ayurvedic practices can help you stay focused and clear your mind.      Daily Routine (Dinacharya)      Following a consistent daily routine is crucial for mental clarity. Some of the daily routine practices are:      Tongue Scrubbing     The coating on your tongue in the morning indicates how much Ama has accumulated overnight. A thick white or yellow coating on the tongue may indicate toxin buildup, especially if accompanied by other signs like fatigue, indigestion, and sluggishness.    Scraping the tongue in the morning (preferably, using a copper tongue cleaner) helps remove these toxins and ensures better taste perception and digestion. Thus, it allows the mind to function with better clarity.       Oil Pulling     Oil pulling promotes better oral hygiene and, in addition, aids in the body’s detoxification.    Ayurveda suggests using organic black sesame oil for oil pulling. Also, make sure that the food you eat is freshly cooked, warm, and light to digest.    Avoid deep-fried foods, excess sugar, processed foods and heavy dairy products like cheese. Heavy foods are hard to digest; consequently, this leads to Ama build up in the body. This can further deteriorate your mental health and cause diseases.      Hydration     Staying hydrated is important for your body and mind. Dehydration leads to fatigue and brain fog, making it harder to stay focused.    Drinking enough water helps remove toxins from the body. Also, avoid excessive caffeine and sugary drinks which can cause mental restlessness. You can opt for herbal teas instead.     For example, I start my mornings with a cup of licorice tea. It is healthy for the gut and is rejuvenating. But I don’t have it for long. I have it for three months, take a break, and then resume. But if you have hypertension or a family history of hypertension, I won’t recommend it.       Exercise and Yoga     A healthy mind lives in a healthy body. Physical activities can boost your concentration level as well as clear your mind.      Yoga and Pranayama   Yoga   Yoga poses such as Garudasana (Eagle Pose) and Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) can help you focus.    Practising Pranayama (breathing exercises) has an immense effect on mental clarity.  Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) calms the mind, and balances the left and right brain hemispheres resulting in deep relaxation.    Bhramari (Bee Breathing) alleviates stress and improves concentration.      Exercise     Moving your body regularly helps lower stress hormones and boosts blood flow to the brain, keeping your memory sharp and your mind clear.    Take part in light activities such as swimming or walking to boost circulation and energy levels.     Walk barefoot on soft green grass at sunrise for better energy and focus. The morning sun exposure regulates your circadian rhythm, improving concentration.    Meditation and Mindfulness     Mindfulness and meditation practices are sure to enhance your concentration and mental clarity.    Pay attention to what you’re doing, be it working, eating or walking. Also, to ground and clear your mind, set aside 10 to 15 minutes to meditate to let your mind calm or practice some breathing techniques.    One of the most powerful Ayurvedic meditations is Trataka (gazing meditation). It involves focusing on one object like candle flame. This deepens focus and clears the mind of any distractions. It is Vata subsiding and offers vigour and vitality.    Abhyanga not only strengthens your muscles and joints but also enhances your skin’s radiance.   Here’s how you can do Abhyanga at home:         Swedana   Swedana, or sudation therapy, is, in fact, a part of Panchakarma preparation. There are 13 types of Swedana. In each type, sweat is induced using different methods.     Benefits of Swedana   Alleviates joint pain: The heat from Swedana helps loosen stiff joints and reduce pain. Reduces toxins: Swedana, therefore, opens pores in the skin to help release toxins. Relieves muscle tension: The warm experience relaxes your muscles. Promotes respiratory health: The aroma from herbal steam helps clear sinus passageways and restore easy breathing.     How to Do Swedana ?   You can get it done at an Ayurvedic hospital under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor.   If you want to do it at home, you can try this: Fill your bathtub with hot water. While doing so, make sure that the temperature of the water is neither too hot, nor too cold. Immerse yourself in the water for 15 minutes. This is called Avagaha Sweda.   Avoid your eyes while doing any kind of sweating treatment.
