Changing seasons can have an effect on your Doshas. That’s why it is important to understand your Dosha imbalances with each season and find the best practices that would help you to adapt and be in good health despite the changes. Kapha season usually refers to late winter and spring.   The season is typically cold, damp and stagnant. Known as Shishira Ritu in Ayurveda, this is the season where Kapha Dosha gains dominance and your Agni (digestive fire) is at its peak.    Identifying Kapha   Kapha people are most likely to have a compact big-boned structure. They have deep-set eyes and strong hair, and tend to gain weight.    Excessive Dosha can manifest as chest and lung or nasal congestions. It can also cause digestive problems due to a sluggish gut. Emotional factors might create overeating & end up in gaining weight.  Kapha’s imbalance is also associated with sadness and emotional turbulence.    It tends to favour a lethargic sedentary lifestyle. Individuals who have heightened the Dosha are likely to suffer from diabetes, gallstones, hypertension, varicose veins and oedema.    Symptoms of Kapha imbalance   A Kapha imbalance is usually marked by the following symptoms: Lethargy Excessive sleepiness Nausea Constipation Indigestion   Ayurvedic tips to balance kapha   Ayurveda works on the principles of Doshas – Vata, Kapha and Pitta. While each of us has a unique proportion of each of the Doshas, a predominant Dosha tends to increase more quickly than the others.    Kapha season tends to bring on the qualities and symptoms of excess stagnation. Its dominance  is represented as a heavy sluggish tendency, it is characterized by heaviness and slow gait. An imbalance in this can lead to stubbornness. Trying out new routines or interests can stimulate a lethargic mind.   As per Ayurveda, a healthy balance can be restored by following a lifestyle, food regimen, and exercise pattern. A vigorous self-massage with warm organic sesame oil is prescribed to invigorate the stagnant Kapha. Sesame oil abhyanga aids in balancing Kapha Dosha.    Kapha season is when the dosha is dominant. It is characterized by slow movements and grounding qualities. Those people who are prone to it must keep their feet warm and protect their chests from cold breezes.   Opt for warm food and steer clear of raw food as well as frozen foods and beverages. The consumption of bitter and astringent tastes has lowering effects on it.    Waking up before sunrise can also  be very beneficial to a Kapha personality. Do not sleep late into the day. An early start can help balance this dosha .   A glass of warm water can help activate your bowels and cleanse your body as a persons tend to suffer from constipation. Clearing of the nasal passage will provide relief from the symptoms.    Ayurvedic tips to welcome the Kapha season   Keeping warm is intrinsic to handling the Kapha season. Avoid cold and damp places. Consume warm meals, warm teas, warm water and nuts. Add Tulsi or mint leaves to your tea to stimulate the digestive system. Consumption of warm beverages and sipping hot water throughout the day help in heating and detoxifying.   Stay warm. Move out of cold damp spaces and choose warm dry places.    Kapha season tends to bring lethargy. It might herald the onslaught of depressive and stagnant thoughts and feelings. Ensure that you engage and rev up your psychological well-being.   Another often-noticed fallout of the Kapha season is the lack of energy. It can get exacerbated due to stress and inadequate sleep.  Its combat imbalance, therefore, with good sleep hygiene, can significantly improve energy levels   Activity is crucial for balancing the dosha. Yoga can help significantly during the Kapha season. You can balance Kapha by combining pranayama with yoga to ensure sufficient circulation and strengthen the respiratory system.    Alternate nose breathing works wonders for its imbalance.  You can also incorporate Surya Namaskar into your yoga routine. Activate your body during the mornings and evenings with yoga and daily walks.   Consume seasonal fruits like oranges, pears and apples. However, avoid very sour fruits. Also, do not consume heavy fruits like coconut, bananas, and dates.    Incorporate turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, fennel, and nutmeg as they can help generate heat. These spices will pacify and stimulate the digestive system.     Correcting Kapha imbalance   Ayurveda can help you manage Kapha imbalance with lifestyle modifications and the right diet. Your diet must neutralize its properties. Since it is light and cool, warm and dry foods can help restore the balance.    Foods that are light and spiced can help curtail the tendency to overeat. Heavy foods, on the other hand, tend to burden the system and, consequently, worsen Kapha symptoms. Oily and pungent foods aggravate Kapha.    Kapha tends to produce plenty of moist mucus and it is therefore recommended to eat dry foods with minimal ghee or oil. You can include grains, beans and seeds. Ayurveda does not recommend consuming buttermilk and milk products during its season.   Kapha is often aggravated by milk products. However, you can consider adding yoghurt or ghee to your diet. The consumption of wheat must be reduced too. Avoid processed foods and refined sugar. Sweets might increase the lethargic feeling. Refined foods have hardly any fibre; therefore, they can aggravate it   Ayurvedic Herbs to Combat Kapha Dosha   Ayurvedic herbs that can support Kapha include Trikatu, Bibhitaki,  and Arjuna.   People use bibhitaki, a traditional herb, to treat throat infections and other ailments related to its imbalance. They are most often autoimmune like neurological conditions, chronic pain and metabolic imbalances. Chronic conditions differ from acute conditions as their symptoms are persistent leaving the patient in pain, emotional pressure and social reclusiveness.    Globally, it is noticed that chronic conditions are a major issue as they are prolonged and require continual medical attention. Ayurveda has been effective in treating chronic health conditions at a nascent stage and they can be prevented from worsening. It goes to the root of a problem and treats it rather than suppressing the symptoms.   Today’s fast-paced life, dietary and activity changes, have given rise to increasing prevalence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Obesity and smoking are associated with these conditions.  The incidences of diabetes have also sharply risen.    Such chronic health conditions have to be managed with a strict diet lest it affect other organs like the eyes, heart, nerves and kidneys. Pulse Diagnosis in Ayurveda: Myth or Medical Marvel ?

Pulse Diagnosis /  Nadi Pariksha     Ayurvedic medicine has used a traditional and holistic approach to improve a person’s health and well-being while also considering their mental, physical, and spiritual aspects for centuries.  The practitioners use various diagnostic methods to check the imbalances of mind, body and spirit leading to diseases. One of those diagnostic methods is Nadi Pariksha or pulse diagnosis.    It is widely believed that Nadi Pariksha is one of the mandatory parts of Ayurvedic treatment. But, it is not true. For ages, people have tricked us into believing that nadi pariksha or ayurvedic pulse diagnosis is compulsory for ayurvedic treatment.   The absolute truth behind Nadi Pariksha as a diagnosis tool   None of the ancient Ayurvedic texts – Caraka Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya or Susruta Samhita has any major reference about pulse diagnosis. Then how can Nadi Pariksha be the mandatory part of diagnosis?   There is no doubt that the most comprehensive, authentic and recognised course to study Ayurvedic Medicine is BAMS. However, in those 6 years I spent studying to become an Ayurvedic doctor, there was not even a single subject on Nadi Pariksha except for a few words here and there. Why is it given little or no importance if it is the most a major diagnostic tool?   I studied Nadi Pariksha from my father while assisting his patients. He had told me that it was just one of the diagnostic tools and not the only tool.     Is Nadi Pariksha’s diagnosis so crucial in the treatment process?   Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis is a recent advancement in Ayurveda and is not based on the 3 original scriptures. It is just ONE of the diagnostic tools, not the only one of the most important.    I don’t do Nadi Pariksha even in my face-to-face consultations. I don’t find it necessary to identify a person’s Prakriti by Nadi Pariksha. With all humility- thanks to the universe and my gurus – within the first few minutes of seeing and talking to a patient,  his Prakriti becomes obvious. It is not a magical power, but it just comes from practice. Let’s find out in this blog.     What   is   Stiff   Person   Syndrome?     Stiff Person Syndrome, SPS in short, is a progressive neurological condition like Parkinsonism. It comes with the following symptoms:   As the disease progresses, the patient experiences the following:   SPS as per Ayurveda   SPS is primarily due to unaddressed Vata imbalance for long periods.  It also leads to undernourishment of all the 7 tissue systems (Dhatus) including blood, bone, muscle, bone marrow, etc. owing to low digestive fire (Agni) and Ama (toxin accumulation).   SPS is a rare disease. In my entire practice, I have seen only 2 patients with SPS and strangely, for both patients, there was a history of emotional trauma in the past.   The first patient was my BAMS final exam case study and hence, I could not do much follow-up.    The second patient was on my 6-month program, now taking only review consultations every month. The treatment has been going on for over 2 years with medicines, diet for Vata imbalance and body treatments to bring back the strength of muscles.¬† Though the condition may take more time to cure, currently the patient is only on mild medications and can walk, do daily activities and has a good quality of life. Tongue Assessments in Ayurveda

Tongue is one of the sense organs; it is the organ of taste. But Ayurveda sees it as a far more important tool that can be used for diagnosis. In Ayurveda, a tongue assessment helps to recognize the following conditions: Any Ayurvedic doctor can clearly see the imbalances of the body and hence digestion by looking at it. You can also do a self-assessment.   Regularly checking your tongue helps you identify when toxins are being accumulated in your body, when certain foods you consume are causing negative reactions to your system, or when other indications of disorder arise.     Tongue Assessments     If your tongue is yellowish, cracked and rough, it denotes a Vata imbalance.   Your tongue shows shades of red, blue or black and if you experience a bitter taste often, it denotes a Pitta imbalance.   If you have a white, clear, watery, it implies Kapha imbalance.   Do a self-assessment You may wonder – oh! my tongue always looks a certain way; therefore, how do I figure out if it has any abnormalities?  Just like how you take a BP or do a self-examination of the breast, it is important to check it for a range of days to look for signs of digestion. Tongue analysis is something you can do by yourself.  I advise my patients to take a photo of their tongue every morning before brushing; consequently, they should send it for 15 days. Do this for 15 days. COVID Care‚ the Ayurveda Way

If you or someone you know just recovered from COVID, kudos! The main threat is over, but you still have a huge hurdle to overcome – dealing with the aftereffects. The virus might have caused damage to both your physical and mental health without you even realising it.  Now that you have recovered, it is time to focus on healing. Your primary aim must be to bring back your lost immunity over anything else. Immunity is not in the decoctions or supplements you have. It is in the food you eat, the exercise you do, the sleep you get – the quantity and quality of it, the way you go about your whole day – your ROUTINE! Immunity is a cumulative effect of all these small healthy habits you do every single day of your life. Get back to eating healthy slowly and steadily. Start with fasting, let your digestive fire build slowly, and then increase the quantity of food progressively. Start by consuming light, warm cooked foods with good fats and continue until your digestion is back to normal. Get back to exercising regularly. Just because you feel weak or tired, do not skip exercise. Do some kind of movement or activity. Simple walking or Yoga would also do. It is a known fact that Vitamin C boosts immunity. But, do not overload with Vitamin C and citrus fruits to gain back the immunity while your digestion is still a question mark. Work on your mind. The virus affects your brain function and clearly, the mind. The best way to relax your mind is to have a good sleep and breathing exercises and meditation. Make this a triple-lined part of your schedule. Post-COVID hair fall Another aftereffect of COVID is hair fall. About 90% of post-COVID hair fall is due to a condition called Telogen Effluvium. This condition is a result of your body being subjected to a phase of physical and mental stress. The bright side is that this hair loss is reversible and the hair will grow back. But it may take some time to get back to its fullness. During this condition, if you are someone with good iron levels, it will compensate for hair loss. Else, the body will use the iron reserves to build red blood cells. Hence your iron levels are important for reversing Telogen Effluvium and getting your hair volume back to how it was. In Ayurveda, a low haemoglobin level is called Pandu. In Sanskrit, Pandu means ‚ a pale whitish discolouration.  Pandu is a disease caused by the vitiation of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) in the body. Caraka Samhita‚ the ancient Sanskrit text on Ayurveda, suggests a few natural tips that help improve haemoglobin levels in the body. Consume a teaspoon of Amla powder with ghee before lunch. Reduce consumption of salty and sour foods. Stay away from alcohol. Exercise regularly. Include red grapes and black raisins in your diet. Reduce consumption of Vidahi‚ foods, which combine pungent, sour, oily and heavy qualities and cause burning. Some examples are apple cider vinegar, coffee, tomatoes and potatoes. Include dry ginger in your diet.
