Foot Massage in Ayurveda – Padabhyanga

Do you struggle with sleepless nights? If your answer is yes, let me introduce you to an Ayurvedic foot massage that can help — Padabhyanga.  Padabhyanga is not just the remedy for tired feet; it is also a gateway to a calm mind and restful nights.     What is Padabhyanga?     ‘Pada’ means foot and ‘abhyanga’ means massage. Hence it is an Ayurvedic foot massage done with the help of medicated oils. In fact, it’s not just a massage, but a therapeutic experience that restores balance and brings calm to your mind and body.  In Ayurveda, your feet are, indeed, considered the foundation of your body’s well-being. Furthermore, they play a crucial role in maintaining balance and harmony. By nurturing your feet, you support the balance of your entire system.   From an Ayurvedic point of view, Padabhyanga: Balances Vata and Pitta Doshas Strengthens the connection between body and mind Activates key Marma points in the feet, facilitating energy flow By focusing on these energy points, the therapy restores harmony and supports the healing process.     Why Foot Massage?     In Ayurveda, the body is likened to an inverted tree. The head represents the roots, nourishing the body. The limbs (arms and legs) are the branches, performing essential functions. Without strong roots and healthy boughs, the tree cannot flourish. In the same way, if one part of your body is out of balance, it influences the rest. When you practice Padabhyanga, you stimulate key points in your feet connected to other parts of your body. This simple therapy provides profound benefits not just for your feet but for your mind and internal systems as well.     What Can  Padabhyanga Do?     Ayurvedic foot massage a.k.a. Padabhyanga offers numerous incredible health benefits:   Relieves anxiety and alleviates stress Padabhyanga releases the accumulated stress of the day. The rhythmic strokes and herbal oils calm the nervous system and create a sense of calm.   Improves sleep quality Foot massage is especially beneficial for those who have insomnia or a disrupted sleep pattern. With regular practice, you can have nights of uninterrupted peaceful sleep.   Enhances circulation Not only does the foot massage increase blood flow but also ensures better oxygen and nutrient delivery to the body’s tissues.   Boosts immunity By toning the body’s energy and enhancing circulation, Padabhyanga fortifies your immune system.   Balances Doshas It helps to balance the Tridoshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—to guarantee holistic well-being.   Relieves nerve pain Padabhyanga calms the nerves, hence it is an excellent procedure for pain relief and healing in conditions associated with nerves.   Detoxifies the body It helps to eliminate toxins (Ama), leading to better health.   Improves eyesight Padabhyanga is a great way to enhance your vision and treat several eye diseases ranging from myopia to cataracts.     Now Comes the Big Question!     Which oil should one use to do Padabhyanga? When it comes to making the foot massage really effective, choosing the right oil makes a world of difference.  Chandanadi Oil is my personal favourite. It is very cooling and calming. Also, it consists of a mixture of sandalwood and over 50 other herbal ingredients. Doing foot massage with this oil calms the mind, reduces Pitta aggravation, and induces sound sleep.     How to Do Foot Massage at Home?     Padabhyanga can also be done by yourself — you don’t need a professional for the same. Here’s how to do the foot massage yourself:     Choose your oil Use a good quality Chandanadi oil for Padabhyanga. Instead of buying from a commercial brand, it’s better to buy it from an Ayurvedic doctor, who prepares their own medicines following the traditional recipe.   Prepare your feet Wash your feet thoroughly with warm water and dry them. Then, get into a comfortable position, in a quiet space.   Apply the oil Gently warm the oil and slather it on soles, heels and ankles.   Massage  Start with gentle circular motions on your ankles using your thumb and palm. Massage the Achilles tendon with slow, deep strokes. Move to the top of your foot, kneading from the heel to the toes. Focus on each toe, gently squeezing from base to tip. Don’t forget to massage both feet!   Duration Spend 5-15 minutes per foot. The deeper the massage, the longer the relaxation.     The Best Time to Do Padabhyanga   Padabhyanga is best done at night, right before going to bed. A foot massage at the end of the day prepares your body for sleep, helping you wind down for deep sleep. It can also be added to your regular Abhyanga (full-body massage) routine.     Connection Between Foot Massage and Mental Health     Padabhyanga not only works on your physical body, but also fosters your emotional health!  It helps you feel more connected and balanced during times of stress.  Many consider it a meditative experience that clears the mind and brings inner calm.     Who is Padabhyanga Suitable For?   People with sleep disorders              If you have trouble falling asleep or experience disturbed sleep at night, Padabhyanga may be your living remedy.              These symptoms generally occur as a manifestation of Vata imbalance. A foot massage with warm oil can be the answer to your sleep                       issues.   People with stressful lifestyles               If you have a hectic work life, a foot massage at the end of the day helps you relax and revitalize.   New mothers               Regular Padabhyanga alleviates postpartum stress and sleeplessness in new mothers.   Those experiencing foot pain               Whether due to walking, standing, or health conditions, Padabhyanga relieves aches and pains.   Elderly individuals As you get older, circulation tends to slow… Continue reading Foot Massage in Ayurveda – Padabhyanga

Follow by massaging your hands, feet, and the rest of your body.   Use gentle, circular motions over joints, but with long strokes on limbs for the self-Abhyanga session at home.   Wash it off with warm water after 20 minutes by taking a shower.   The best oil for Abhyanga is organic black sesame oil. It is Vata subsiding and offers vigour and vitality.    Abhyanga not only strengthens your muscles and joints but also enhances your skin’s radiance.   Here’s how you can do Abhyanga at home:         Swedana   Swedana, or sudation therapy, is, in fact, a part of Panchakarma preparation. There are 13 types of Swedana. This is called Avagaha Sweda.   Avoid your eyes while doing any kind of sweating treatment. Also, avoid Swedana if you are pregnant, consume alcohol regularly, or if you are a diabetic and take insulin.   Make sure you do not consume food within 1 hour of Swedana.   If you have never tried the authentic Ayurvedic way of Swedana treatments, you are completely missing out! You must try it at least once in your lifetime.     Panchakarma   Panchakarma is a full-body cleansing therapy that not only helps detoxify the body but also brings back the balance of the Doshas. Shiro Abhyanga – The Healing Touch of Ayurvedic Head Massage

There’s nothing more comforting than a head massage (Shiro Abhyanga) after having a hectic day. If you’re from India, you would have experienced the iconic head massage by our mothers or grandmothers using herbal oil at least once in life. Now, with my busy schedules, I sometimes crave for those massages.    Talking of head massages, in Ayurveda, a head massage with herbal oil is called Shiro Abhyanga. ‘Shiro’ means head and ‘Abhyanga’ means massage. Shiro Abhyanga involves a complete massage of your head, neck and shoulders using herbal oils.      The Importance of Shiro Abhyanga     Our head is the most important part of our body. It comprises components, such as brains, nerves and sense organs, that control various necessary functions of the body. In Ayurveda, they consider the head as ‘Uttamanga’ or the best organ among all in the body.   In Charaka Samhita Sutra Sthana, the importance of head is mentioned as follows:    प्राणाः प्राणभृतां यत्र श्रिताः सर्वेन्द्रियाणि च| यदुत्तमाङ्गमाङ्गानां शिरस्तदभिधीयते||   The head is referred to as the supreme part of the body because it is the place where life forces (Prana) and all the sense organs (Sarvendriya) are situated.   Therefore, maintaining the health of the head is necessary for the health of your whole body. Shiro Abhyanga is one of the many methods to soothe and strengthen the functioning of your head, and thereby, your overall body.      Benefits of Shiro Abhyanga   Relaxation and Stress Relief   Shiro Abhyanga helps your mind feel relaxed and comfortable. The gentle rubbing also helps calm your nervous system. It is really beneficial, especially for people who work long hours or feel stressed a lot. The best part is that the effects of Shiro Abhyanga are not temporary, but long lasting.   Enhanced Blood Circulation   Shiro Abhyanga is known for its ability to enhance blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles. As blood flows to the hair roots, it stimulates the scalp. Consequently, it promotes the growth of hair follicles.  This ensures early growth of the hair, making it smoother and silkier. Regular massage with Ayurvedic oils strengthens the hair shaft due to the increased blood flow and reduces shedding.   Mental Well-being   It is amazing how Shiro Abhyanga benefits focus and other concentration patterns. In many scenarios, individuals undergo a lot of stress as a result of workload and other issues. The gentle strokes and movements during the massage take away the stress and help you focus and concentrate. One added advantage of the massage is that it helps get rid of headaches and migraines that are often results of stress.    Spiritual and Emotional Balance   In Ayurveda, we believe that the head is very important. It is where we think and feel things. There are also energy centres in our body called Chakras. When we massage the head, we can make the energy flow better in our body. This can help us feel more peaceful and balanced inside. Shiro Abhyanga is a way to take care and love yourself and show love to yourself. It helps you connect with who you are deep down.   Choosing the Right Oils for Shiro Abhyanga   The choice of oil used during the massage can further enhance its benefits.    In Ayurveda, the following are some of the commonly used oils for head massage: Organic black sesame oil Ksheerabala Tailam Lakshadi Tailam Chandanabala Lakshadi Tailam Dhanwantaram Tailam Yashtimadhu Tailam Mahamasha Tailam Manjishtadi Tailam    It is always safe to use the oils as per the recommendation of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor. They’d be able to prescribe the right oil or mix of oils depending on your Prakriti, Dosha imbalances and health conditions.    At my unit, we prepare herbal oils exclusively using locally sourced authentic Ayurvedic herbs. These oils are free from heavy metals and strong Ayurvedic herbs, ensuring a safe and effective treatment for our patients.   Ayurvedic head massage or Shiro Abhyanga addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of an individual’s well-being. Seasons Change, So Should Your Ayurveda Routine

With changing seasons, our bodies undergo various changes. You might experience Dosha imbalances, seasonal allergies, gut health issues due to varying digestive fire (Agni) and more. But you don’t have to worry! Ayurveda offers the perfect advices to take care of yourself with the changing seasons. In this blog, let us delve deeper into the principles of Ayurveda and how they guide us towards optimal health and wellbeing, particularly in alignment with the changing seasons.   Understanding Ayurveda   Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that focuses on the physical, mental and spiritual well being of a person. It is not just about treating health conditions; Ayurveda can also be considered as a way of life that ensures the overall wellness and well being of an individual.  At its core, Ayurveda recognizes that each individual is unique, with their distinct constitution, or “Prakriti,” which is determined by the three Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These Doshas govern various physiological and psychological functions in the body and are influenced by factors such as diet, lifestyle, environment and the changing seasons.   Seasonal Wellness from Ayurvedic perspective   According to Ayurveda, the key to maintaining good health lies in living in harmony with nature’s rhythms, including the cycles of the seasons. Each season influences the doshas with its own set of qualities.  Therefore, Ayurveda recommends seasonal adjustments to diet, lifestyle and daily routines to maintain balance and prevent imbalances or illnesses. For example, during the hot summer months, when Pitta Dosha tends to be aggravated, Ayurveda advises consuming cooling foods and beverages, such as fresh fruits, salads and herbal teas, to pacify excess heat in the body. Similarly, in the cold, dry winter months, when Vata Dosha may become imbalanced, nourishing and grounding foods like soups, stews and warm spices help to counteract the cold and keep Vata in check.   Ayurvedic Treatments for Seasonal Wellness   In addition to dietary and lifestyle recommendations, Ayurveda offers a wide range of treatments and therapies to support your health with changing seasons.    Abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage)   Regular massage with organic sesame oil or Sheeta Tailam (during summers) helps to lubricate the joints, nourish the skin and calm the nervous system. These massages are particularly beneficial during the dry, cold winter months.   Panchakarma   This Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy involves a series of cleansing procedures designed to eliminate toxins from the body and restore balance to the Doshas. Health professionals often recommend Panchakarma during seasonal transitions to reset the body and boost immunity.   Herbal remedies Ayurveda employs a vast array of herbs with specific properties to address imbalances associated with each Dosha and season. For example, herbs like Tulsi are known for their adaptogenic and immune-enhancing properties. they, therefore, make an ideal choice for supporting overall health and well-being throughout the year.   Ayurveda and Seasonal Routines   Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medicine take into account the natural properties of the elements. The different combinations of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) form the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha).  The varying characteristics, such as mass, heat, feel, compactness, etc., are present in nature, including the different seasons. These characteristics directly influence our physical, mental and overall well being.  Understanding the characteristics of each season is crucial for making necessary adjustments to your diet and lifestyle in order to maintain good health. The ancient Ayurvedic texts advise adhering to a schedule that aligns with the six distinct seasons in their region.  We will simplify things – routines, foods and more for each of the four seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. But they can vary depending on your location, your Prakriti and Dosha imbalances.    Routines for the Autumn season During autumn, Vata’s dominance brings cold, wind, dryness and restlessness. Adjust by adding warm foods and fats like ghee, dressing warmly, and having warm oil massages. Opt for seasonal foods, warm water, and less cold foods like salads.   Routines for the Winter season In Winter, colder weather worsens Vata and increases Kapha. Neglecting season-appropriate routines may lead Vata-dominant individuals to have dry, cracked feet, poor sleep and distress. Vata types can stick to Autumn routines. But Kapha types should opt for warm, light foods and aromatic spices like black pepper and mustard, with less oil.   Routines for the Spring season During Spring, increasing warmth melts built-up Kapha qualities, causing phlegm and allergies. For renewed energy, engage in more movement like walks, gym or yoga. Massage dryly, and consume warm, dry foods with bitter greens and spices. This season is also ideal for detox or Panchakarma.   Routines for the Summer season In summer, Pitta-dominant individuals must take extra care in the hot weather. Stay cool by avoiding midday sun, walking in forests and using Sheeta Tailam for massages. Try relaxing yoga and cooling pranayama, like Shitali and Sheetkari, along with meditation. Stay hydrated with drinks like coconut water, and have cooling and seasonal foods.   Consult an Ayurvedic Doctor   Incorporating Ayurvedic principles into your daily life isn’t just enough. It’s essential to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic doctor for personalized guidance to ensure your overall well being. An Ayurvedic doctor assesses your Prakriti, identifies imbalances, and recommends personalized treatments.   Embracing Emotional and Mental Wellbeing   In addition to physical health, Ayurveda also places great emphasis on emotional and mental wellbeing. According to Ayurvedic teachings, the mind and body are intimately connected, and imbalances in one can manifest as symptoms in the other. Therefore, we encourage practices such as meditation, yoga, and Pranayama (breathwork).  They help promote relaxation, reduce stress and cultivate mental clarity and emotional balance. In this fast-paced world, Ayurveda reminds you to slow down, reconnect with nature and prioritize our health and well-being. By aligning our daily routines with the changing seasons and understanding our Prakriti, we can cultivate vibrant health, balance and vitality in our lives. So, let us embrace the wisdom of Ayurveda; furthermore, let us embark… Continue reading Seasons Change, So Should Your Ayurveda Routine

Shirodhara – the treatment and benefits

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment that involves pouring a continuous stream of warm oil or other liquids onto the forehead (the “third eye” or “Ajna chakra” point), in a rhythmic and gentle manner. The term “Shirodhara” is derived from the Sanskrit words “shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow).    Throughout this process, the oil is carefully drizzled onto the forehead, coating the hair and everything with a thick layer of oil as it trickles down. At the outset, it might seem unusual and cause a tingling sensation on your forehead. Even though it may be challenging for a few individuals, it should never cause them distress.    Occasionally, having oil drizzle onto your forehead can be quite enjoyable. Many individuals claim that the Shirodara treatment is akin to a massage for your brain. When the oil seeps into your forehead and hair, it can nourish the hair roots and alleviate problems with dry scalp and hair. It also helps to hydrate and nourish the skin on your scalp, neck, and forehead. Regularly doing this can greatly benefit your hair, especially if you do it at least once a month or more frequently.    The oil is heated before application to improve the body’s absorption of it. This results in treatment being more comfortable and less complicated. The temperature of the treatment can vary depending on the client’s preferences, but it is generally a safe temperature for skin contact. Altering the temperature can provide a sense of well-being for the client and bring equilibrium to the body.   What are the benefits of Shirodhara?   Shirodhara holds significant importance in Ayurveda and holistic wellness for several reasons:   Deep relaxation Shirodhara induces a profound state of relaxation by calming the nervous system and promoting the release of stress and tension. This relaxation response has numerous benefits for overall health and well-being, including reducing anxiety, improving mood, and enhancing sleep quality.   Balancing the Doshas According to Ayurvedic principles, imbalances in the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) can lead to various health issues. Shirodhara helps restore balance by pacifying excess Doshas, thus addressing the root cause of many ailments and promoting holistic healing.   Mental clarity and focus People believe that regular sessions of Shirodhara enhance mental clarity, concentration, and cognitive function.  By calming the mind and promoting relaxation, Shirodhara can help individuals achieve a heightened sense of awareness and focus.   Stress reduction In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a prevalent health concern. Shirodhara offers a natural and effective way to manage stress by promoting deep relaxation and releasing tension stored in the body and mind.   Support for sleep disorders Shirodhara is often recommended for individuals struggling with insomnia or other sleep disorders. The calming effects of Shirodhara help prepare the body and mind for restful sleep, leading to improved sleep quality and overall well-being.   Nourishment for hair and scalp The warm oil used in Shirodhara provides nourishment to the scalp, strengthens hair roots, and improves the overall health and appearance of the hair. This aspect of Shirodhara contributes to both physical and cosmetic well-being.   Holistic approach to wellness Shirodhara exemplifies the holistic approach of Ayurveda, addressing not only the physical symptoms of illness but also the underlying imbalances in the body and mind. By treating the individual as a whole, Shirodhara promotes long-term health and vitality.   Overall, Shirodhara is an essential therapy in Ayurveda for its ability to promote deep relaxation, balance the Doshas, and support overall physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being.   How is Shirodhara performed?   Shirodhara, a specialized Ayurvedic therapy, begins with careful preparation of a warm, comfortable space free from distractions. The client reclines on a comfortable surface, usually on their back. Suspended above their forehead is a vessel containing warm oil or a chosen liquid, carefully selected based on the individual’s Ayurvedic constitution and therapeutic goals. Before the therapy commences, the therapist may perform a gentle head massage to relax the client and prepare the scalp. Then, with steady hands, the therapist pours the warm oil or liquid onto the client’s forehead in a continuous, rhythmic stream. The fluid flows in back-and-forth or circular patterns, covering the entire forehead and often extending to the scalp.    The duration of the session varies but typically lasts around 30 to 60 minutes, during which the therapist maintains a consistent flow of oil or liquid. After the session, the client will be allotted time to rest. Depending on the type of oil used, they may leave it on the scalp and hair for absorption or wash it off after a specified period. Follow-up sessions may be recommended for optimal results, along with complementary Ayurvedic treatments or lifestyle adjustments to support overall well-being. Shirodhara is a gentle and deeply relaxing therapy that requires skill and attention to detail to ensure a safe and effective experience for the client.   I perform this procedure using different combinations of medicines. Sometimes, it is oil; sometimes, it is a combination of oils; sometimes, it is just a decoction. Decoctions are much more effective than oils. We prepare the decoctions of the oil, we pour it, and the patient will be lying down here. From the nozzle, the medicated oil goes into the forehead of the patient.   Health conditions Shirodhara is used for   For people suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s, memory loss, parkinsonism, people with mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, psychosis, neurosis, and all those kinds of situations, this treatment is super effective. Even in psoriasis and in some cases of ulcerative colitis, where the mind is also involved, and in certain diseases of the gut, where the mind is also involved, we give this treatment.   In general, if you don’t have any health conditions, you can still use this treatment, but the medicines will be different. It is amazing for cooling down, calming you down, making you relax, rejuvenating and improving the overall health of this area.   Shirodhara treatment for… Continue reading Shirodhara – the treatment and benefits
