Inflammation is a commonly seen word in anything related to health and wellness. It is a symptom that is connected to an array of health conditions that include heart diseases, asthma, arthritis, dermatitis, cancer, etc. It is also associated with depression and different auto-immune diseases.

In short, we can say that inflammation is associated with almost every disease – from common cold to cancer.

Ayurveda considers fire an important element. It is considered necessary for good health. Fire in metabolism helps us digest the food we eat, gain energy from it and burn waste. However, at times, the digestive fire can be excessive in the wrong places and this can cause inflammation and associated health disorders.

Ayurveda sees inflammation as a symptom of disturbance or imbalance of the Pitta Dosha (the fire principle) – one of the three Doshas or biophysical energies of the body. This condition can be controlled and even cured by making a few adjustments to your diet and daily routine, apart from taking supplements.

Talking about diet, here are three inflammatory foods that you should avoid when it comes to daily consumption.

Curd

Yes, you heard that right. Curd is a heavy, heating food. Ayurvedically, it can cause the accumulation of toxins and blockage of channels. Therefore, it is not advised to consume curd on a daily basis.

Black Gram

Black gram is also a heavy heating food, which can increase Kapha and Pitta – two of the three biophysical energies in our body. Therefore, it is not recommended for everyday consumption.

Eggplant

Eggplant is considered unwholesome and inflammatory. It can cause blockages of channels and is therefore not recommended for everyday use.

A healthy individual who exercises daily, has good Agni and who has been habituated to consuming these foods, can have them in moderation. However, if you have health conditions, Dosha imbalance, improper lifestyle or impaired digestion, it is better to avoid these foods.
