We acknowledge and celebrate birth, don’t we? But we fear talking about death.
Just like birth, death and diseases are inevitable too.
Caraka Samhita mentions 5 reasons why diseases are caused.
- Unsuitable food and lifestyle
Mithya Ahara Vihara
Consuming unhealthy food on a daily basis and having a sedentary lifestyle can invite many of the chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. that are nicknamed “lifestyle diseases.”
- An unstable mind invested in sensual pleasures
Asathmya Indriyatha Samyoga
Misuse of the senses can cause an imbalance of body and mind and lead to toxin (Ama) accumulation in the body.
- Repercussions of one’s actions
Karma
According to Ayurveda, Karma is action; it is also the cause and effect and more. In short, the diseases you suffer from are the outcomes of your actions.
- Ageing
Kaala
With time, your body grows weak, becomes less immune and more prone to diseases.
- Intellectual offense: Knowingly committing a sin
Prajnaparadha
Ayurveda considers Prajnapradha – an offense against wisdom as the main cause of all diseases.
When there is hope, there is despair
When there is normalcy, there is adversity
and when there is birth, there is also death & disease.
There are things that are beyond our control and we may not be able to do much about it. But then, there are things which are totally in our control and we can do a lot about it, today, right at this moment.
I will cite an example:
You may not be able to naturally reverse the grey hair or that wrinkle that appears after 30 to how it looked when you were 16. But we can do a daily Abhyanga to keep up the youth of skin and hair!
The point is: Let us take baby steps. Let us take one day at a time and try to live a disease-free life by all means possible!
